The book by Prof. Arkadiusz Morawiec is a pioneering attempt to capture how Polish literature of the 20th and 21st centuries addresses the topic of mass atrocities – not only the Holocaust, but also the Armenian Genocide, the extermination of the Roma and the mentally ill, and the Srebrenica massacre. The author expands the field of literary scholarship to include often marginalised forms of memory and raises challenging questions about the place of the Holocaust in the broader context of the genocidal experiences of the 20th century.
The Bulgarian translation was authored by Prof. Margreta Grigorova, a distinguished scholar of Polish literature and promoter of Polish culture in Bulgaria. The presence of Professor Morawiec's text in one of Bulgaria's most important literary journals is also a significant contribution to the popularisation of Polish humanities abroad.
The publication of an excerpt from the book in "Литературен вестник" is an important step towards an international discussion about the role of literature in shaping collective memory and humanist sensibilities. It is all the more gratifying that Polish reflections on literature and history have been recognised and disseminated in this way.
